I had a great time at the SEGD conference in May and enjoyed speaking at two workshops on documentation software. In addition, I had a series of intriguing conversations with designers and fabricators about technology, Identia Online, and the design-build process. In this newsletter, we are pleased to introduce the first in a series of articles about the design-build business model and its role in architectural sign projects.

Architectural sign programs and the design-build process
I approach the subject of design-build with a healthy respect for the strong feelings it arouses in the environmental graphics industry, but I am also convinced it is an important topic that deserves a serious and balanced airing. Based on anecdotal evidence, it is likely that up to 80% of the sign programs implemented in the United States each year are not designed by SEGD members, but by sign fabricators themselves.
In the linked blog entry I make several observations about architectural sign programs and the design-build process that are the result of my own experience. In the coming months, our firm is going to explore various aspects of the design-build process with the overall purpose of fostering a serious and balanced discussion.

Travis Speaking at SEGD Workshop in NYC
I will be a speaker at the "Documentation Strategy" SEGD workshop in New York City on July 30.
From the course description: "Environmental graphic designers have a complex and difficult job in documenting projects. Instead of just one approach, designers can employ multiple strategies based on the design process, the project collaborators, or the implementation methodology. This course looks at documentation as a set of strategies with specific standards as well as best practices from concept documentation to shop drawings."
